Kadikoy Travel Information:

One of the first settlements in İstanbul was at Fikirtepe, established between 4000-3000 BC. With the arrival of the Phoenicians in 1000 BC, a new colony called Harhadon was established on the coastline. At around the same time, Chalcedon, meaning 'Land of the Blind', was established on the opposite bank of the Kuşdili river, between present day Moda and Yoğurtçu. With the arrival of Thracian immigrants in 680 BC, the city sprawled eastwards. Soon it became the capital of a state reaching as far as Gebze. However, the simultaneous development of the Byzantium soon overshadowed the Chalcedon surge. Following the arrival of Turks in Anatolia, the city was taken over by Seljuks in the 1080s. Fram 1352-1353, the region entered Ottoman rule. Upon the conquest of İstanbul, Mehmed II offered this area to the first kadı, or judge, of the city, Hızır Bey, hence its name Kadıköy. Starting to be used as a summer resort in the Byzantine era, the area retained this feature in Ottoman times. The development of mass transportation on the sea led to the consruction of luxury seaside mansions and pavilions. After the construction of the Bosphorus bridge, Kadıköy and its surroundings became a natural extension of metropolitan İstanbul.
